"Can foreigners buy property in Thailand?"

Of course, they can, I have seen many farang blokes buy houses without having any ownership, and you find them a few years down the line crying into their beer as their wife or girlfriend has either kicked them out or sold it in secret.

There is the option to buy one in your Thai partner's name and then get a 30-year by 30-year lease but at least one person I know 'disappeared' and the house was taken back by his wife after his disappearance.

When it comes to setting up a business and then buying the house, if the authorities find out the business is just there to buy the house for you to live in then there will be lots of problems coming your way.

But I have just pointed out the negative just to put that side forward, I am sure many thousands of farangs have built and paid for a house in their wife's, or girlfriend's name and have lived happily ever after. 🙏

I have done this - at my behest, the wife was happy to continue renting (dead money). Pretty sure I will be dead before she decides to kick me out 😀

Had a friend that did the 30 years land lease deal. Wife left, in laws threaten him, trashed the house and property. He called the police time and time again. NOTHING.

Finally after they trashed his truck by throwing rocks at him when he was returning home he abandoned the property.

Welcome to Thailand

If you have money, there is no barrier.

Sold it in secret 555

They do it with cars and motorbikes I suppose, so property wouldn’t be much different.

There are always these bad stories, but then again the happy tales aren’t as entertaining so aren’t told as often.

You said, "Pretty sure I will be dead before she decides to kick me out..."

Possibly, but will it have been a natural death or an Agatha Christy type of death? 😄

Well, maybe some of the "happy tales" are kept secret?

I mean how many guys would admit to the fact they are now trapped and under the thumb if they don't behave and do what they are told while they are reminded as to who actually owns the house? 😃

I am not in a permanent stay position, like all the other people I know I have to apply and get annual visa extensions, make 90-day reports, put 800,000 baht into a Thai bank account,  and re-register my address at this house if I leave it for just one night if I stay that night in a hotel.

I am not complaining as I knew the rules before coming here, but I do not feel I am a permanent resident here, I am a long-time visitor now entering my 16th month.

But Thailand is a great place to be in at the moment. 👍

I know of one who was macheted to death in a "house robbery", so running away when the odds are against you is the more sensible option to take.

A girl we know in my wife's village did that to her husband of 10 years

He built a house for 4 million baht

They live in Germany and just visit from time to time

She lost money gambling and sold the house for 2 million

And the idiot husband is now saving money to build another house!

I've been with my wife for almost 20 years

She's lived mostly in Canada and her family all live in Bangkok

So we've never needed a house in the village

She stays at her aunt's house or we stay at a nearby hotel

We will build a house for retirement

And maybe I will do the house lease thing

But honestly, I look at it as "time served"

If we broke up, the house is her's
