Got hit with an $800 fine after going through a red light a few years back. After that I was extremely careful.... 😆😆😆

I would be very concerned about my own driving if I had to be "extremely careful" not to go through red lights.

It's part of a raft of changes they have brought in - single issues are never effective as you can see in Thailand.

Basically they have adopted the "safe System"  and this is what they have done

Although this is about railways the quality of Thai roads has come up and been compared to Saudi. It should be noted that Saudi which had a deplorable road death rate, has reduced road deaths by a third in recent years. It is also worth noting that Saudi roads are again built in a way that encourages straight line speed. They are however better build quality.

To achieve this they have introduced measures that Thailand still has to do…

They are collecting and analysing data for road safety

They have set up and are achieving key targets. The problem is seen as public health issue e,g, - the work of authorities across health, transport and environmental sectors

Promoting a culture of safe driving across the country.

Importantly, they have adopted the iRAP (the International Road Assessment Programme) to assess the safety of road infrastructure, with the aim of achieving a minimum 3-star rating for all roads.

There is now closer monitoring of road user behaviour to identify areas where additional reinforcement is needed. And this is followed up by enforcement.

They have trained over 400 ENGINEERS IN TRAFFIC SAFETY.

Signage  - installed 1,300 signs to warn drivers of dangers.

Improved lighting at intersections. – it is important that the right type of lighting is used

Enforcement

They’ve established an automated Traffic Enforcement System for serious violations. Such as speeding, crossing red-lights, the non-use of seat-belts and using mobile phones. Camera systems increased by 320%.

They’ve improved vehicle inspection notably trucks at weighing stations.

Post-crash response – something Thai is severely lacking in

Established  new centres of the National Centre for Security Operations.

Activated new air ambulance services.

Raising awareness of the importance of first aid.

Established a level I trauma centre in the King Saud medical city.

Analysis

A death registry system that includes more detailed data to analyze the causes of crashes and apply preventative measures.

Strengthening and coordinating data across Ministries. Involving doctors as lead certifiers in the registry system and providing them with training.

Apart from the introduction of female drivers, those driving in Saudi are still the same people yet they’re 30% less likely to die in a car

Think on Thailand

As I said, the main reason things have got better is more cameras and hitting people in their pocket.

"Main reason that Saudi roads have become safer over the past five years is not to do with road build quality, but the proliferation of cameras that are absolutely everywhere these days. "

THis is patently not a good assessment - of the situation. Enforcement is one of the key factors in a holistic approach to road safety.

Whilst they are important they are only one part of the whole picture

THailand has failed to adopt the safe system and the figures remain appalling.

Agree to disagree here then I think.

Fact is, I've done over 200,000 km on saudi roads over the past five years.

There has been no big change in the road standards. They've always been good.

It's the cameras.

YMMV, literally.... 😆😆😆

U'm sorry  but all your comments indicate that you don't have a basic understanding of road safety or the current situation in Thailand

rolling out cliches like mileage driven just underlines you have no idea what we are talking about.

If you bother to look a the figures you will see there has been an improvement of around 30%.

"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia reduced road crash deaths by nearly 35% in five years. The fatality rate stood at 9311 [28.8 per 100,000 people] in 2016. By 2021 the rate had dropped to 6651 [18.5 per 100,000 people]." WHO

Citing personal anecdotal evidence just underlines how you don't understand

Remember the plural of anecdote is not data.

your option now would be to start sealioning - just another cliche from ytourself

"boots on the ground" - I suppose you know what Dunning Kruyger have to say about your view of things?

So you think you are better informed than the WHO and all the road safety organisations involved in Saudi?

You're showing denial lin the face of hard evidence. - cognitive dissonance?

the only way you can reasonably disagree is to count and analyse every crash in Saudi over te past 5 years - boots and all.

I think I'm better informed than you based on the facts that:

1) I actually lived and drove in the country, a lot. You didn't.

2) I've witnessed 1st hand the massive implementation of cameras and the subsequent changes in driving. No one wants to get fined.

3) I've spoken to hundreds of people, countless times about how things have changed and WE'RE ALL saying the same thing based on what we've seen on the roads.  It's a topic in general conversation like the weather. So we're all wrong and you're right!? 😂😂😂

It's quite comical that you're making yourself out to be some kind of expert on a country you know nothing about and have never set foot in. It's like someone reading a book on driving in Thailand and then telling someone living there that you  know more than they do about the local driving conditions and habits.

Do you even know what a Saudi turn is? 🤔🤔😆😆😆
