News Forum - Koh Samui anticipates 34 billion baht mainland bridge by 2028

Yeah the bridge will go quite well with the proposed Thai Canal or Kra Isthmus. I will bet that someone out there is trying to link the Samui tourism industry with also making a deep enough port at Surathani. From there the bridge would be totally functional to Samui or tourism going to Krabi or south to Trang also making new rail transport. All the nice areas in the south will soon take a dive for the worst.

You think the bridge tolls will be cheaper than the ferry?

How will it benefit Samui and the other islands?

How will you get to KPN? Will there still be a ferry from Don Sak or will they run from Samui?

No, they wont!

I think I remember to read something about bringing all in the ferry industrie somehow in the bridge business.

Progress can`t change money flow

The new highway 44 which pretty much goes all the way from DonSak to Highway 4 on the Andaman side is a joy to drive. That's your route to that side right there.

Drove from Krabi to our house in Pran Buri not so long ago and was amazed at how quick it was thanks to the 44.

20-kilometre bridge, slated for construction in 2028, to connect Koh Samui … …

I shouldn't worry by the time the kick backs have forced corners being cut it will probably fall down in 2029.

Exat governor Surachet Laophulsuk said today that it would be run alongside the ferries- they of course won't survive with the main part of their business gone - so other services will die too.

He also said it would "improve health links" - as Samui already has about 5 hospitals, I fail to see that playing a big role. Looks like they are hunting round for justifications. As I said before, this isn't for the island it is a project that benefits civil engineers and others who stand to make a fortune out of this project

Study or whitewash?? - Exat governor Surachet Laophulsuk said yesterday that there would be an "impact study" - over the next 24 months - but the remit seems very vague - it will be up to local bodies to raise questions and objections.

the bridge is meant to provide an overland transportation "option" IN ADDITION TO air and ferry links,

A rather  spurious comment was that it reduce the time needed to attend to public health emergencies on the island.
