How about pledging some life saver training and equipment instead of standing on the sidelines. Or maybe some swim certification courses for children in rural areas. Most kids drown in canals and Ponds upcountry in Thailand, not in the sea off of Phuket's lovely beaches. The rural kids can't afford nice Phuket beach holidays. Drowning's in Phuket are an issue for some tourists, but not many of them would be Aussie tourists who learn to swim at a very young age.

Extremely good point

I grew up in the housing projects in the city

But we had a nice free public pool and all the kids in the neighborhood growing up took their free swimming lessons from a very early age

So you have all these poorer, city kids that learned how to swim and all strong swimmers!  :)
