In this context, how does one differentiate between a transgender, and someone pretending to be a transgender?

People get banned from websites for asking this question, because it's usually asked as a piss take.

But a predator like this, could be a danger to authentic transgenders, however you define them, just as they are to other/real women.

So it's important not to blur gender lines between men, women, and any 'third sex' category as exists in some cultures, such as kathooey.

Stray from the physical, cognitive, and anthropological notions of gender, and you create the potential for abuse, no?

Many people will be aware of a psychologist called Mike Bailey, who wrote a book called The Man Who Would Be Queen. In it he documents that the taxon 'transsexual' is not homogenous, and two types of biological male ask for sex changes.

One is the HSTS or ladyboy, needs no introduction. Though he's not entirely sympathetic to them, he basically says they are more like women like men, in certain physical as well as behavioral senses, and the ease of life passing as female, is, what drives them. They aren't simply gays who want to trap men. But they are 'natural prostitutes'.

Then there is the AGP type which is a sex fetish. The case here is a bit less convincing, because they are approaching doctors for castration. It's inconsistent with perversion. Nonetheless their life histories are classically male, and they aren't passably female in body or mind, they need to rehearse cross-gender behaviors. They might even have been athletes or something else flamboyantly male, before switching to flamboyantly female.

Well whatever is the truth of autogynephilia, or it's role as a motivation, my point is, you can identify a genuinely ill type of transsexual/transgender,apart from much more ordinary biological males who seek sex changes.

Usually not for nefarious purposes, to be sure, but focus on identity and outward expression over syndromes, are what blurs the line and is making 'pretending to be a transgender' riskily indefinable.

The real ones hug you as they steal your necklace while the fake ones punch you in the face? 
Seriously though, this guy is a recidivist predator and hopefully old age will render him impotent by the time he finishes serving his lengthy prison sentence for raping dozens of people.
