Locked in a construction worker camp in Bangkok – Thailand’s hidden Covid tragedy

Recommended Posts

Friso Poldervaart and Greg Lange, founders of the Bangkok Community Help Foundation, spoke to The Thaiger this week about the critical problems emerging in some of the worker and construction camps. Some 80,000 people – mostly Burmese, Cambodian and Thai workers – have been isolated in these shanty towns, basically imprisoned. They are guarded by Thai police and army. Some of the construction developers are doing the right thing and providing food and supplies. But others aren’t. Whilst the tourism authorities are talking up the Sandboxes and reopening the country to tourism, this human tragedy is unfolding in and around […]

Nothing more than criminal but there again in a country where a human rights lawyer is made to "disappear" what hope is there for the less well off.

it is a pure tragedy where the tycoons running these construction sites. If the workers are illegal, these tycoons should be held responsible

100% agree and in many cases enriching themselves further by employing illegal labour working  for a pittance and giving them something a pig would be ashamed of living in.

I know of 2 construction 'camps' in the CM region, both company funded, clean and well maintained.  The Burmese/Tai Yai workers simply refuse vaccination despite one camp being offered Sinopharm, bought specially by the company.  No Covid in the latter camp so far.

The other camp wasn't as lucky.

Down south many worker camps are mere corrugated iron shanties with poor hygiene and the most basic of shared amenities.

This one in Phuket at least had some 'green-space' between huts >

until a week ago, where "lock down" was introduced the workers were brought to work in the same pick ups and trucks as they used to be, despite rule of social distance.

If they were able to isolate in their shed, then they would surely be infected on the transport.

I have example of someone wanting a Covid test, 2 weeks ago, but was told, that as a worker from aos, he had to pay 4,000 THB for the test, what he claimed was equal to 1 1/2 month salary, so he took the chance, that he was not infected.

This is a way to blur the real number of positives, which probably are more than 100,000 if a real test was made.
