Piyachat would feign curiosity about the size of their genitals and coax them into sending explicit pictures. Once in possession of the images, she would then threaten to expose them on social media or send them to their partners unless they paid her.

Shockingly, some individuals fell victim to this extortion scheme four to five times a day, resulting in losses exceeding 40,000 baht.

Wondering why Thaiger feels compelled to refer to them as "transgender," a fake word, when the perfectly descriptive "ladyboy" will suffice, and it's what they call themselves.

My girlfriend and I lived next door to seven of them in Rawai, Phuket (Bangla / Patong sex workers) while out of commission during Covid most of 2021.

We spent a lot of time socializing around the pool, drinking, BBQ, etc. Not one single time did I hear a single one refer to themself as "transgender," and they seem perfectly happy with ladyboy.

Also, none of them were political about anything. That's why they were perfectly pleasant to be around and count as friends.

Why is Thaiger and other intent on feeding the antagonism of the West when this aspect of Thai/Lao/Cambodian culture goes back at least 700 years and is well ingrained in culture.

How about leave it alone? The way it is, and everybody can be happy about that?

I fully agree. Rightly or wrongly, people associate transgender with gay. Stories don't stress wether they are about gays or lesbians, unless it is relevant to the story.

'Kathoey' is a word only found in some Daic languages, and is picked up from Mon-Khmer, an unrelated language family. It doesn't mean transgender, nor 'ladyboy' literally. Though it's meaning is somewhere between eunuch and intersex.

Male effeminacy that was perceived as congenital, and not chosen, including some homosexuals and transgenders (in western terms) but not all of them, would be seen as kathoey. Even if they tried to suppress their urges - they would be defined as, such by their nature's, not personal identities, social roles, or individual choices.

Conceptually it is shaped by the Pali (Magadhan) religious writings, featuring words that share a semantic field, and we're translated as kathoey and it's cognates, in Indochinese languages.
