The system takes time to change. My question is why did the judge sentence the accused to only 6 years and not the maximum 10 years before reducing the sentence by 50%?

Confession means that the victim does not have to  go through trauma of a trial. Many rape victims wilt under the pressure and scrutiny of cross examination and the accused is set free.  In order to obtain confession something  must be offered and that is a reduction of the  sentence.

In Thailand sparing the victim additional trauma is not the rationale for offering sentence reductions in return for the accused pleading guilty. Confessions are coerced using the force of a greater punishment for pleading not guilty. In Thailand the accused has 2 main options - plead guilty while expressing remorse and be rewarded with a 50% discount in sentencing or plead not guilty, likely lose and then get the full sentence. Thailand’s legal system is stacked in favor of the police & prosecution and it takes deep pockets and a brave soul to fight accusations a criminal court.
