THG head stock purchases before questionable Pfizer news

Recommended Posts

Thailand and Pfizer have had a tricky relationship with frequent announcements and then retractions about whether the vaccine will be approved and imported into the country. The latest was Thonburi Healthcare Group Dr Boon Vanasin announcing they had negotiated 20 million Pfizer vaccines to be brought into Thailand, only to be followed a few hours later by Pfizer-BioNTech responding that they have never had any dealings with THG and no contract had been signed. Now it appears that the seemingly false announcement was made just after the wife of THG head Boon purchased a large amount of stock in the […]

WOW!  Even if the contract was legitimate, buying that much stock in your own company right before a big announcement at the VERY least doesn't look good.  Now the question becomes how through an investigation will be done.
I don't know the laws in Thailand pertaining to insider trading but in America something similar to this could easily land you in jail if they found insider trading - just ask Martha Stewart.  I would imagine they are trying to determine if the wife knew of the pending "announcement", if she tried to sell the stock afterwards, and what role her husband had, if any, in passing along information or in the purchases.
Hopefully it was just coincidental timing that the purchases were directly before the "announcement."  I'm sure she could assuage the appearance of wrongdoing if she agreed to hold the stock long-term.  Maybe 5yrs.  Given the import of vaccines doesn't appear to be happening the stock price should drop down to previous levels.

This is Thailand so as the man whose wife bought the shares is obviously connected I suspect that it will be found to have simply been a small mistake that become a misunderstanding.

Move along people - nothing to see here - move along - all is good.

2 years later .........  Media Announcement:  A full and independent investigation is to be conducted by  Col Pornghyubcoamrchai into the matter. ......................  The fact that he is married to the person's sister is irrelevant - what organisation do you work for??  Now move along people - nothing to see here - all is good.

The behavior of this unelected government makes it hard to believe that they will attract any intelligent, rich foreign investors to this new long term visa scheme, right? Seems like a huge gamble here.

There is big money to be made in Thailand by those with money and connections.  The proposed Visas will allow them to come and go a lot easier than before, and it gives them a bit more than the Thai Visa Elite program does. That is who the new Visas are targeted at - not 'normal' rich investors from overseas.

I'm not sure if insider trading is illegal in Thailand. Probably maybe.  But who cares? Get the 20 mill Pfizer and as far as I'm concerned this lady and her old dude can make billions in profit.

The reason I'm a bit upset is that this case shows that the private sector is just as useless and corrupt as the other sector. Khmm... Go   vernment.

And the icing on the cake was this article. It's a must-read :) When you think there is no way they are this much stupid, you realize that indeed they are.

I've got to disagree with you quite strongly there, @BookShe, as it's this is one of my pet hates.

They're NOT "this much stupid".

If they were, that would be an excuse, as  it's seldom someone's fault that they're "stupid".

Look at all that's gone wrong with the procurement and the roll out, either as you see it or as reported in the BP, and at every wrong step either someone gains directly from sales or potentially indirectly from backhanders.

I'm not talking about the supposed and pointless "scams" suggested here by falsifying a few PCR tests or putting a few people in ASQ, but about decisions that could give some millions of dollars a year, for years, without a care that they could ruin the economy, cost millions of people their livelihoods, and thousands if not tens of thousands their lives.

"Stupid"?

No, sorry, that's far too forgiving.

Ok. They aren't stupid. But the other option is waaay more dangerous. Are you suggesting that CP group who owns 15% of Sinovac is cohuts with the government? I'm sure you know better than that, that it's impossible.

I suspect we will discover that as the family have a controlling shareholding in THG they will have standing orders with brokers to buy all and any stocks that are made available.  This is common business practice.  The questions will be asked of the brokers involved and the standing orders history assessed.

seems unlikely that there was any truth in this claim of a pending contract with Pfizer.  If this proves to be the case then this THG gentleman should be ashamed of himself.   This is a sensitive time anyway with so many struggling for a vaccine but to offer people hope falsely in order to make a quicm profit via their share price just seems extremely low
