AstraZeneca asks to extend vaccine delivery date amid delays

Recommended Posts

After delays in domestic and international deliveries and halving the monthly vaccine delivery targets to 5 million for Thai use, AstraZeneca has now asked for an extension for their delivery schedule of 61 million Covid-19 vaccines. The company, which has partnered with Siam Bioscience to produce vaccines domestically, now expects to reach its goal by May of 2022. The delay will not help Thailand’s already painfully slow vaccine rollout, which heavily relied on domestic productions over importing vaccines. While AstraZeneca has promised to try to stick to the original commitment, Deputy Minister of Public Health Satit Pitutacha says that increased […]

All the bragging and chest puffing at the start is now biting them in the a***, all I can say is "Som-nam-na to the government, it's the normal Thai people who are going to continue suffering.

The government better beware of 112, they may have to lock themselves dare they say anything.

When we closed our hotel back in March 2020 I was pretty sure that the whole year will be in jeopardy. Everyone called me a fear-monger. I had to lay off all our staff with severance payments trying to save as much money as possible, to sit out something which we really didn't know much about back then. I turned out to be that I was right (or lucky)

Fast forward to July 2021. The situation is even direr than a year ago. Record cases daily and the lack of "good" vaccines makes 2021 another lost year. I can only congratulate all of those who made this possible. My bet is that the hospitality sector won't be able to even partially recover before the 2022 high season (October)

Btw. Where is Anutin? As a health minister, he should be commenting on this news.

All the AstraZeneca vaccines the government has received have already been distributed and they now expect only 5 to 6 million more per month. The original plan called for 10 million vaccines per month, starting this month, until the end of the year.

The government is now scrambling to put together a vaccine procurement plan that will supply the country with at least 100 million vaccines by the end of the year.

So if all goes according to plan and as expected, there's only a shortfall of 70 million doses this year?

A mere nothing .....

Pfff. They will just delay the second dose from 14 weeks (should have been 4-5weeks) to 6 to 8 months, saying that a single dose is working fine in the smaller Thai body. They can also start using the Thai miracle herb (fah talai jone) which was proven to be effective to cure covid. Problem solved.

Anyways, just out of curiosity what's your plan now? Reopening in 2030? I don't mean this bad and I hope I'm wrong but I don't really expect a bounce back within 10 years.

I don't know why they are banging on about Astra Zeneca.  It is Siam Bioscience that are screwing up the production process.

Who signed the contract with SB a  company who never produced a vaccine before?

Nope. We are done as a hotel. Samui was in a downward spiral in terms of tourism long before covid. Actually, covid helped me to sit down and try to figure out something else away from mass tourism. My plan is to reopen as an all-inclusive Retirement Club. However, I still have to wait before my customers can safely travel here. I've been sitting and drinking here waiting for the vaccines to arrive. I don't think my liver can survive another year. :)

Yes cement production is not the same like a vaccine production ?

I note that Astra Zeneca are one of the few vaccine manufacturers who have given license to produce their vaccine in other countries. Can the same be said for Pzifer or Moderna or other vaccines?? Clearly not! So those countries that do have license to produce Astra Zeneca need to get on with it!!! It is recommended for those 60+ (the most vulnerable). So get on with it!! And lets put some pressure on the big names...Pzifer, Moderna and others to stop making billions and start producing and giving license.

It's a good point. :)  This French setup is not the same what Astra did but at least it's a start.

"Pfizer vaccine production to start in France this week

The American Pfizer and Moderna Covid vaccines will be made in France by the end of April, with more factories set to open shortly after."

I remember a few months ago the PM joked that in India you have to share a bed. Now in Thailand you can’t even find a bed.

Now no vaccines and a shortage in the next few months. Thailand has been relying on foreign donations from Japan, Red Cross and US.

Actually Moderna has given out licenses. In fact, Moderna outsources all it's production since they didn't own any factories. That said the problem isn't the lack of licenses, it's the lack of high level production facilities around the world. Producing covid vaccines is not like producing flu vaccines. Early in the process, Canada partnered with China on one of their vaccines. The intent of course was to procure all the required vaccines for Canada through China (who contrary to media reports is the actual largest producer of Covid vaccines in the world, no it's not India who is in reality third). However once they saw the data, they cancelled the partnership. Canada's back up plan was to self produce at some of the few vaccine production companies still remaining in Canada. That was until they were told it was basically impossible. See the problem was the existing Canadian facilities produce low level vaccines, not the high level stuff. To retool the factory, and retrain the staff would have cost more and taken longer than to actually build a facility from scratch (which is exactly what Canada is doing, it's suppose to come on line in December). Hence why Thailand is having the problems they do now, or at least in part.

And Biontech/Pfizer is building a production line in Singapore to supply south east asia.

Astra Zeneca is used in more countries worldwide than any other vaccine.

Roughly three times as many countries use AZ than use Pfizer.

A significant factor in this is than AZ can be transported and stored using simple refrigeration.  Pfizer and Moderna have more expensive specialised storage requirements

This article does not explain when all of this on various waiting lists can hope to be vaccinated.  Here in Isaan there is nobody being vaccinated.   There is no evidence of controls of travel from different provinces.  What is actually happening please?  Not 'plans' or 'negociating' or 'discussions' just real information about when we can realistically expect supplies to be delivered to our hospitals.  Please.

Yes you do. We all know why. And they don't care as they are already vaccinated.

Great news that Singapore will have a production line of Pfizer for South-east Asia. I know South Korea was pushing for this also, it would be advantageous for them to do a production line also. I just don't understand why Thailand was so complacent and not preparing for what is occurring now? They could have made attempts for Bio Science to produce more vaccine in the event their leaky border with Myanmar would bring cases via a domino effect from India, it was a so clear.

I don't think that will matter one iotta. That is not the vaccine they are pushing for and made by a certain place.
