Canada just passed a new law which will regulate the media and internet to supposedly "promote Canadian content" but is criticized, even by Trudeau's own cabinet, as truly being a censorship law. Not a good look for Canada.

Freedom of the press is a necessity within a democracy. Its how we hold those with power to account.

However it should not be confused with legislation to curb freedom to lie which is what the predominately right wing conspiracy theory nutjob sites do.

If you provide evidence and you are prepared to back that up in a court of law then its a duty to do so.

If you are not providing a fact based media source then expect to go the same way as Alex Jones and Fox news.

Far more insidious is the enforcement of ‘balanced reporting’ as implemented in Australia. The Australian Broadcasting Commission has been bullied into this position by a sustained attack from conservative politicians. Balanced reporting, is where the conservative forces in politics tally up the negative and positive stories for each party as presented by the national broadcaster. Any perceived bias is met with threats of funding cuts. The big casualty is truth.

We have the same in the UK. The BBC is constantly hounded as being too left wing while being run by the Conservatives and their lackys. Believe me the output from the BBC is anything but left wing. Brexit and its impact on the economy has largely been ignored. Instead we get excuses that something, anything, oh look a squirrel, is actually the problem.

Just how right wing is enough?

Also the latest target is the civil service. Made up of mostly privately educated public schoolboys apparently its not right wing enough. Needs more swastikas and cow bells.
