When one is exchanging at public places like the airport it will attract unwanted attention of those around as there are many who are always waiting for the opportunity to prey on them. Why can't they travel cashless way? Just use their ATM to withdraw enough cash for a day or two at the ATM machines all around Thailand. Basically all petrol kiosks are equipped with such facility.

As much as possible, don't be wandering around the airport and exchange money, the gangs are always there especially in the Basement Floor and around the check-in area to target tourists. They are at least 10 of them that I noticed when I left Thailand on Mar 21.

Simple answer : cost.  ATM withdrawals are expensive.

Besides, overseas ATM withdrawals rely on the magnetic stripe, which is the weakest part of an ATM card in terms of security.  There is a reason we only tap or insert the card at a shop, never swipe.
