This happens way too much.  Most of the time it seems like it's the small chartered boats.  I'd stick to the tours that use the big boats (ships).

I just took all kinds of boats from Phuket to Phi Phi to Koh Lanta then back to Ao Nang

Big ferry from Phuket to Phi Phi on Phi Phi Cruiser was very nice

I'd opt for a proper ferry every time regardless if a longer trip

Speedboat from Phi Phi to Koh Lanta

Boat wasn't in bad shape but it's not that comfortable of a ride and if it hits a big wave wrong could be an issue and getting out of a sinking speedboat could be difficult

Medium sized boat Koh Lanta to Ao Nang

Definitely in the worst shape.

Ride was surprisingly smooth

But I absolutely looked at the windows and any other escape route if an issue arose

PS....On the Speedboat was a family

2 young girls probably 9-10 years

No life jackets on

BUT....the Mom was wearing one.

I would think if the Mom wanted to wear a life jacket she'd put one on her kids!

The boat drivers in Thailand only know one way - The fastest way. No matter how the sea is behaving, it is always full speed ahead. Safety and comfort for the passengers is not important for them.

Even medium to big ferrys can be a problem due to over loading. These operators has no morale or safety adherence.

Just anectodal but I wanted to take the direct medium boat from Koh Lanta to Ao Nang and couldn't because it was sold out
