I was in Yogyakarta when Merapi erupted in 2010. I had arrived the day before for a short break which ended up being a longer one. The city was covered in ash, everyone fled. Grey everywhere, looked like a dirty snowstorm. The streets were empty.

Chaos at the airports, flights cancelled all over Java. I had two upcoming flights in Solo and Jakarta; Lion Air gave me a cash refund, Air Asia gave me (an impossible to redeem) “credit shell”.

My learning experiences: 1. Merapi is dangerous. 2. Yogyakarta is much better without tourists. 3. Air Asia can’t be trusted.
