Recommended Posts

The AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine has been approved to be used as a third “booster” shot as well as a second dose for those who have been injected with a dose of the Sinovac vaccine. Thailand’s National Communicable Disease Committee officially approved the additional AstraZeneca doses. Following hundreds of cases involving vaccinated healthcare workers testing positive for Covid-19, as well as the death of a nurse who had received 2 doses of Sinovac and later contacted Covid-19, Thai authorities looked into using a third dose to boost immunity against the coronavirus. The booster shot will be administered to medical professionals and […]

It sounds like a move of desperation, rather than design. Kind of like a rush for the lifeboats. "Take whatever you can get!"

Nobody would sell them the good stuff. Too late for that.

Had to get an Oxford chemistry professor who was also working with Siam Cement to initiate a deal to make AZ locally.  Or Thailand wouldn't even have that.

That's pretty bad news for everyone in Phuket, including expat workers, who received Sinovac 2nd doses already, because there was nothing else.

Where are they left? With little protection against delta which has arrived already and in a place that's actively promoting "tourism", albeit there is nothing to tour and it's mostly would be long term visitors and returnees.

This is the view with 20/20 hindsight. Originally, the expectation was for a vaccine on par with the flu vaccine - 65% in good years. The US FDA was willing to approve anything above 50%. Then Moderna's and Pfizer's numbers came out and what the expectations were changed overnight. Johnson and Johnson can't give their stuff away. AZ is looking like "Oh, isn't that cute." The only issue with the Chinese vaccines is that they were never tested in the clear. They did a Phase I study and then jumped to injecting the entire Army. And those data were never released. Subsequent studies were all over the place. And now there's the Delta nail in the coffin. But all the orders were placed and money sent (or understandings reached) before those things happened. Back when everybody thought it would be great if it hit 50%.
