Witnessing such an act and being negligent in trying to stop or at least report it would be worse than the act itself: the molester would have the excuse of being a mad, deranged person who's in need of help (up to and including euthanasia, preferably voluntary), but what's the excuse of the (multiple even!) witnesses? That they're more mad perhaps?

That doesn't mean I believe the act actually happened. It's just as likely that a superstitious neighborhood has a lot of imagination and then (somewhat ironically) accused a neighbor of being superstitious all the way up to ritualistic killings.

That sounds very much like a conclusion has been reached and that a pesky detail like proof hasn't been discovered yet.
