Photo radar?

Recommended Posts

Hope this is applicable to this group...and I should have asked before...

Rented a car last week at Chiang Mai (CNX) and  drove south and SW.... and thanks for the tips here.

I did notice on my ~2k km trip signs for photo radar. A few times I noticed a pole with a horizontal overhang (another pole) with what appeared to be 2 sensors and a camera.  I was wondering if that was the photo radar and what might be the threshold for ticketing?

I think the speed limit was mostly 90km (Rt 1, 1102, 106...) and mostly I stayed under 110 but last ride I was nearer 120-25 when I passed one.... (kidding, of course....).

I wonder if they take a photo of driver, license plate, etc. and I assume if they do ticket it will go to the rental agency who will then pass on the cost to me?

Just curious about it all... are they operable,  what might be the km-over threshold (and maybe it varies by the speed limit), possible cost, etc.)...?

Thanks.

Regardless of the speed limit, if you're over it, you're speeding.

Fines can be levied up to 4,000 BHT, but usually 500 BHT.

yeah when was it  last calibrated.........got a ticket today 121kmh in a  120kmh  kin ridiculous, binned it along with the others. Oh yeah now they stick a note in saying because youre a  foreigner you must pay it...........presumably if youre  thai then you dont have to, And before anyone chimes in with the usual crap  taxed the cars  just fine. Found in mailbox  nothing signed for..........didnt receive it as  far as Im concerned.

It was always my understanding (and confirmed by several Thais) that these radars are often either fake or not working. I know I sped past them on numerous occasions and never received any fines, however my brother-in-law once received one for 500 baht (Bangkok area).

Yeah, in this respect it's the same as in Europe, you receive a pic of you driving, with a description of the location and speed.

theyre  working alright and they have dramatically increased them,  they do bugger  all for safety, speed isnt the issue its  plain stupidity which they aint going to fix anytime  soon. Also theyre desperate for cash now and speed cameras are a cash cow, just like  global warming, what they really need is a keep froking left camera and get off my ares camera as  well as  an open your eyes and stop looking at that phone u retard  camera, would save  far more lives than the useless speed cameras
