Insane as you say. Perhaps much of the 33 years was for being a foreigner working illegally and taking the job of a Thai 😉

The entire planet must be aware of the harsh penalties for messing around with drugs in Thailand. Everyone is also fully aware of the conditions inside Thai prisons.

So if you commit the crime expect the consequences. It's OK regretting your actions later but the fact is you did it.

 Agree with you. Too much and harsh of a sentence especially for a happy drug that does not string somebody out. You get less time for so many brutal crimes
