Unless a video, with sound, pops up, we will never know the truth for certain.

However, the most telling thing is that there is not a single person, Thai or Foreign, who doesn't think it is plausible (very plausible!) that the police were looking for a money grab.

Reputations don't develop overnight, and rarely form based on nothing at all.

Yes, very much "it walks like a duck, it quacks like a duck"....

I have been reading reports about these late night "security" checkpoints and their ways of soliciting (voluntary, of course) contributions to the Police Benevolent Fund for quite a few years, and from several sources.

I think it’s great when more high profile people get to sample the real delights of the Land Of Smiles. For too long the Thai government and 10 day tourists staying in 5 star hotels and on guided tours of floating markets have perpetuated the facade that is Thailand. Things won’t change in Thailand unless more local people feel supported and empowered by those outside the country.

It surprises me more doesn’t get said. The Thai government don’t like criticism from high profile people and lap it up when there is praise. Consider the reaction to Bill Gates mocking the tangled mess of telecoms cables and the praise handed out by Russell Crowe.
