Strange story.  She works at a bar and leaves with customers whilst having a boyfriend, seems like a recipe for disaster, unless this is a normal arrangement for some in Thailand.

You must have never been in the beer bars

So many of them have Thai bf's and still work and go with customers.

Actually some of their Thai BF work in Karaoke and go with other girls as well!!

Over 20 plus plus years ago I knew a girl in Bangkok who worked in a bar and her boyfriend worked in a gay bar wearing a number. Now that was an odd one. He just did it for the money and could stomach doing it.

Strange? No, pretty much normal, especially in the farang oriented beer bars and go go bars.

Most people posting understand what is happening. But please, stop for a minute. Think what we are all saying. Then realise that for many, this is home. Is this not the definition of madness? Why would anyone choose to make such a place home? These people are beyond the pale. I know it’s all money orientated. But they don’t behave like this in far far worse poverty stricken places in the world.  Thailand is so so shameful and yet Thais are proud of the place! How?

I don't understand why you go to Thailand and spend so much time on Thai forums when you have so much disdain for the people and the country

To me that is almost as bizarre and weird than the guy cool with his gf being a bargirl

I'm not actually having a go at you and I don't disagree with some of your points

I just find it really weird

Because the natural beauty of the country is perfect. Because the climate is far far better than Northern Europe. But the politics and the education and standards of the people lag way way behind developed countries.

I don’t need to sell my soul to the people of a country to enjoy the nature of a country.  I don’t need to make excuses for their undeveloped behaviour. I see it for what it is and call it out on a forum such as this.

The people I don’t understand are those that try to square the circle and  hide behind the fact that Thais lag way way behind a fully developed nation. So no point to dress it up and look for quirky cultural reasons. The fact is that Thailand, its people and its government, including those we can not talk of, are 100 years behind what our father and grandfather worked so hard to achieve. Our entitled attitude in the West make it feel like it fell off a tree. It didn’t. It took courage, hard work, commitment and tenacity to achieve what we have in the West. Why would we hide or be ashamed of that?

I still find it bizarre, personally

So many other countries you could go to

If I felt the disdain you do, I'd never step foot in the place

It just doesn't seem healthy to me...

Your last post was basically about the acceptance of the p4p

Which I sort of agree with you actually

But you think our p4p is a better version??

Our p4p scene, strip clubs and illegal escorts is rife with drug use and abuse

You talk about squaring the circle but a lot of times you ignore what's in your back yard

I don’t care about P4P. Nothing in my post would suggest anything about accepting P4p or suggesting what goes on in the west is better in this area of society.

The facts to me are simple. Thailand is tropical. It’s cheap. You can get away with  doing more or less what you want. The food is different not better. Women are easy to get (buy). My problem is when some people make claims that it’s somehow overall a better place. It’s not. It’s just in the moment or a point in time it feels better.

I’ve met so many people who moved to Thailand in their 50’s or 60’s and felt like they were reborn and 20 years younger. They still had their health and wealth that their “boring country” provided for them. Move the clock on 10 or 20 years and they had turned their back on their home country and even family. Their pension wasn’t what it once was. Their savings had all been given away to the “love of their life” who just happened to be 20 years younger than them (who wouldn’t want that right?).  The problem is that they spent 10 years living in a fools paradise only to spend their remaining 10 in a living hell. Their 20 year younger “wife” went to visits “friends” who were actually men she was having fun with at her husbands expense all along.

I enjoy Thailand for what it is. A warmer country, lovely beaches, with fun people who open cheap bars until 2am or later. Different (not better) food.  Cheap living and care free living. What I won’t accept is that it is in anyway more fundamentally better than Western Europe. It isn’t. It’s a backward, corrupt, bereft of any idea of equality or understanding of human rights country. It’s a docile country who will never catch up to western countries.  I enjoy going to Disneyland, but I don’t see it for anything more than it is. A fun park that isn’t reality.

I don’t have disdain for the country at all. It is what it is. I have disdain for people who come from more advanced countries with better standards of living and better standards of equality who try to suggest Thailand is somehow better. It’s not. It’s a holiday fun zone that some people decide to make home thinking it will be the same fun zone it was while on an extended holiday.

Like all things in life, there are exceptions. Some people on this forum will try to defend what they have and prove me wrong with insults and suggest they have the perfect life. That’s fine, I expect that. However, 90% of those that do, will know, deep down that what I say is right. If they could regain their lost 20 years and their lost £200k or more and regain their lost family, they would. I’m not buying all this Thailand is a great place to live nonsense. It’s an enjoyable holiday place, enjoy it as you do Marc and then go home.

I agree with pretty much all of that

I've been coming to Thailand for 20 years and been with my wife almost as long and never desired to live there until recently

And even then, will spend a lot of time back home

And I do think many guys get intoxicated with finally feeling special that didn't back home

And I especially agree with you about guys turning their back on their families back home

I've seen so many guys brag that they haven't been home in X years and find that sad

But I think a lot times they do so to justify their move to Thailand

Normal is what they call it in Thailand

Every country has their oddities, especially now even more with the younger generation with their nose rings, full face tattoos, gender descritpions on how they relate specifically to themselves ( not a man not a woman but....), men wearing women's clothing, sexual deviation, everyone gettting bent out of shape from they will say untollerable terminology of race, color, sexual preferance etc.

I live a real normal life here so there is no rose colored glasses on my head. I have probably only been back to the USA 5-6 times max in over 23 years and I actually prefer it this way. Not disconnected from friends and family as keep constant contact, but not interested in going back the the USA's rat twisted dogg race of how society is there. If i was to move from CM and thailand becasue of stricter hurdles not able to meet, it will still be in SE Asia. Thailand is not that weird or off the hook at all, but yes there are some places you can get a taste of it if you want it and are looking for it. My life is rather normal, house, family with kids, dogs, play music and go out occasionally to the same watering holes in general that are safe and friends of mine.

I think life in Thailand is a lot difficult when you have kids and your are raising them

It isn't any different than anywhere in the world

So your life is just normal

My feeling and thought is my kids are actually a lot better behaving than the average USA kid as far as from what I can see. Raising my kids here has actually been a godsend wonderful thing for me. They both still live at home going through Universtiy and we are all very clsoe as firends. Never any problems or attitudes form them what so ever. Plainly good kids. Yes, on all other fronts life is normal.

Not so strange if you take into account the simple universal fact that sometimes, in Thailand like anywhere else in the world, boyfriends / girlfriends do cheat.

This behaviour isn’t cheating. It’s done with the full knowledge of the Thai “boyfriend”. He allows his girlfriend to go with other men for money which he takes more than a fair cut of. Does that sound like strange behaviour to you? It sure does to me. These women aren’t really girlfriends, they are the prostitutes of their pimp “boyfriend”.

If you sit at places like Big Dogs Bar on the edge of Nana Plaza around 6pm onwards, you will see many a boyfriend dropping his girlfriend off at work. Most times they may just get drinks off men and return home. If they get a customer who wants sex then they go with them and the “boyfriend” sleeps easier at night knowing money his coming to him in the morning.

That is a big go to place I take people who are visiting here. Watch the world go by and see what is truly coming in for a landing to go to work. Yes boyfriends drop off sone gals and even pick them up end of night. Just reality of what it is and accepted.

It was my favourite Soi 4 bar for many years. However, back around 2017/18 they refurbished it and spoiled it in my opinion. It was also a bar where you could ask the girls to get you some of the lovely street food right outside the door. Now they say they can’t as the bar sells its own food.

Much of what has happened to Big Dogs is a reflection of most of the Plaza and Soi 4. Removing the Golden Bar and building Hooters was the start of the decline.  The removal of the central bars in the Plaza replaced with a uniform boring set of bars was a mistake. Putting the roof on was even worse, making it feel like you were drinking in a sports hall. And finally, with the Landmark hotel claiming the roof (which they wanted apparently) was amplifying the music from the plaza and they have been told to stop playing music. You walk in the plaza now and all you hear are the sound of the many fans.

Friends of mine from Australia come to visit each year and Soi 4 and Nana were always the go to place for a few nights. Last year they decided no more and we went straight to Phuket.

Yea and Big D used to have a bathroom and now they don’t. You have to walk. That really sucks. I still visit Big D’s but you are correct it has changed a bit. Back in subject, you would think by now that the gal in question would have turned up. In reality girls have to be very careful here, bar girl or not.

I actually meant to say life in Thailand is "different " not "difficult "  when you have kids vs a single guy

As for comparison to kids in the US

I don't really know how you can make than statement when you've only been to the US 5x in 30 years

And I would say you are completely wrong

Not that I feel Thai kids are bad

Most are really good

But kids in the US are awesome

I have many nephews your kids age and you aren't finding better kids

Same goes for all my close friend's kids

And actually I see a lot of Thai boys go bad in their teens

Way more than any I know in the US

So I'd politely disagree on your take
