Must see/do in Hua Hin?

Hoping to make it to Hua Hin in January. Any recommendations on sights and activities? I'd really like to do some scuba diving.

A hike up Black Mountain mountain is invigorating. A visit to the Wat next to the Royal supported dog shelter is nice diversion - the grounds can be quiet.  Drive cautiously as the dogs can wander from the shelter and the novice monks seem oblivious when they walk on the road. A trip to the beach (Pines) offers  better quality swimming than the immediate Hua Hin town beach.  I expect that the Cicada market (next to the Hyatt) will be up to speed come January and it makes for an interesting evening. For a rainy day, my go to is  BluPort. I can wander the  grocery store for an hour purchasing things I do not need, or take a massage in one of the chairs. One rainy day, I spent an hour snoozing.  Some mornings I head out to the fishing docks and watch the action.  HuaHin is a walkable town with a songthaew in easy access.

i have lived in Hua Hin for seven years and have been scuba driving since 1977 and I can say you might have the wrong idea about Hua Hin in general because there is no scuba diving here. No islands like you might be thinking, some average beaches, very low visibility water. I fact, i live 100 meters from the water and unless i make an effort, i will not even see the ocean and you would not know its there.

there is windsurfing here and down the coast in Dolphin Bay:

jet ski and nice beach walk to the south of town:

no brainer tourist beach near many hotels:

white lotus on top of Hilton is romantic place for drinks and view to the north. So is East Bar on soi 94. all of Soi 94 is interesting. restaurants, bars, massage. it get better west of the railroad tracks.

bars with the grandmothers of Pattaya bar girls here:

if you go here:

you will be at Angie's Bistro with very good food oddly in the middle of soi 80 red light area.

the train station area was interesting but now destroyed and looks the the 405 freeway. a huge step backwards.  impossible to say what business will be left by the time you get here.

rent a scooter if you can. HH is a two or three night kind of place. a week would be to long IMO.

I shot a film in hua hin years back and recall it being very hot in april and even hotter inside the tin huts along fisherman's village.  however I did have a gal there at the time and I did like the place.  I also noticed many flies biting my ankles on the beach. I hope this has changed.

it has not. i was walking just last week with a new Thai friend who wanted to walk on the beach. she was getting eaten alive and big welts. the strange thing is you can't see them. my first 6 months here went to the beach every day but could not take the burning itching skin after getting out of the water or bug bites. and I grew up in southern California. Malibu, Zuma and Laguna Beach. Some of the problem for me maybe the UV index of 13-14 in the tropics.

Thanks for all the info, and fixing my perception of HH. :)

I guess we'll look to do snorkel/scuba in somewhere like Phuket.
