As Thailand prepares to welcome an infected tide of Chinese tourists, in the US, the Biden administration is changing its policy for arrivals from China, including Hong Kong and Macau. Washington is scared. Coronavirus infections running rampant in Beijing could spawn new and more dangerous variants. From January 5, all travellers from China, including Hong Kong and Macau, must present a negative Covid-19 test before entering the US. Tests must be taken “no more than two days before departure,” a health official said. Travellers who test positive more than 10 days before a flight can provide documentation of recovery in […]

Yes, life has to go on. People has to accept it and manage to live with it. Once cancer was as major disease globally. Now even though it is still a killer disease, everyone have accepted it. Then comes in Aids after that SARS....so just give some time and eventually it will become a norm. Every one has to leave this world one day...even the great founders and believers of religion and non-religion also left including great leaders. That is life

I don't think it is the Thai people wanting the infected Chinese to come in, just the contrary of not wanting the infected Chinese to come in. It is purely the administration in their protective bubbles who are pushing it to appease their masters.

Yup, you said it. Scared of it's own incompetence. Their track record with covid underlines it. 1.1million deaths. What went so wrong?

Anutin is scared of his Chinese "cousins" and doesn't want to offend them. 50% of Chinese arriving in Italy on 2 flights yesterday tested positive on arrival and that is what we can expect here when they flood in for the Chinese New Year. Anutin was quick to brand dirty farangs for not wearing masks but he won't protect Thai people from unvaccinated Chinese or those vaccinated Chinese who go their useless vaccines a while ago. He is too busy trying to organise his "coup" to become the next PM to be bothered organising a testing system. His delusions of adequacy as Minister are leaving the nation exposed to yet another wave of infection brought by those wonderful folk who gave the world Covid in 2019.

Oh please. The old talking points are not working any more. Your motherland is currently a basket case, with estimates of 250 million infections in 3 weeks, shortages of basic medicines, overwhelmed hospitals and crematoriums working at over-capacity 24/7.

That’s the only reason. Despite many people claiming foreigners contribute little to the Thai economy, the evidence shows the it’s vital to the survival of the country. The jubilation and relief that tourist numbers are showing good signs of recovery is palpable. I do hope some of the less friendly people in the tourist industry in Thailand (Phuket taxi mafia for example) won’t exhibit short memories when it comes to playing fair. Yeah right….

To be fair, the US is behind other countries in requiring tests for passengers out of China (any nationality). Fact is like the original outbreak; the Chinese are very short on information particularly when it comes to gene sequencing.  This while complaining others are not being fair to them, while they were much tougher to others for the last three years.  No doubt the hypocrisy is lost on them as always.

Spot on @EdwardV  the world has learned nothing for Covid. The U.K. government who was so slow to react to to Covid in early 2020 has said they are keeping the situation with China under review. WTF. BAN OR TEST!!

Cancer has never been a contagious disease.  The comparison is faulty.

Life does have to go on, without question, but this isn't about life going on.  This decision is about money, plain and simple.  The government wants the money that Chinese tourists will bring in. Period.

It's one of the reasons they are trying to stop the nationality of accused criminals from being released.  If the press keeps talking about Chinese criminals, they feel that Chinese tourists would be less likely to come to Thailand and part with their hard-earned yuan.

There will be a lot more than 1.1 million deaths in china.....But as they did with their virus, they will hide that from everyone too!

Brave, if somewhat foolish, prediction worthy of the NYT and Washington Post.

If the Thai health ministry has done its due diligence on the capacity of its hospital system to cope with an uptick in admissions as a result of an open border policy with China, I see no reason why Chinese tourists would be subject to extra screening measures.

I’m delighted to see the U.K. has joined a growing list of countries requiring people travelling from China to have a negative Covid test. That is the right decision by the U.K. government.

'If the Thai health ministry has done its due diligence'......unlikely

'I see no reason why Chinese tourists would be subject to extra screening measures'......new mutations??

The concern for me arose when I read an article in the Bangkok Post today. The Health authority spokesperson said that as well as looking to screen arrivals from China, they would also be looking to introduce random PCR testing for all arrivals. They didn’t say what happens to you if you tested positive. Would you be shipped off in to a hotel room for 7 days or even a hospital at your own expense?

It was a passing comment that hasn’t been picked up on in terms of what this could mean to tourists arriving in Thailand. Hopefully it was just a mistake and will be clarified. If not, then we are back to 2021 and tourists should think twice before travelling to Thailand.

A new mutation could come from anywhere, in which case everyone coming in should be subjected to screening.

But chances are it is from the original country of release.

True - however, China's zero- covid policy means that it represents a huge pool of people with poor or no immunity, which makes mutations much more likely.

CCP policy of very poor vaccines, banning foreign vax, brutal lockdowns, no herd immunity, destroying an already ruined economy etc = 20 to 30 million dead Chinese; all very old or very ill though … as in West actual Covid dead = 0.02% total pop. Accept It and Move On……all a CCP Power exercise.. now CCP know they can do anything with their docile sheep population. 😩
