At 8:20am today, the body of a Thai navy sailor from the sunken HTMS Sukhothai was found on the coast of Koh Samet island, Chumphon province, southern Thailand. In a press release this morning, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Navy Admiral Pokrong Monthatphalin, said that 76 out of 105 crew members survived after the ship went down off the coast of Prachuap Khiri Khan province on December 18. The legacy and tribute to these poor souls should be to learn all the lessons they can and implement change to ensure it won’t happen again. That won’t happen of course as a full and open investigation may cause senior people to lose face. Some lower ranking scapegoat will be identified and paid to take the fall.

All too true the world over - punishing the innocent so that the guilty can be protected happens everywhere, not just in Thailand. Or am I being a tad too cynical there?

Well, like so many things in life, investigations are never simple black and white. Power and influence will have investigations diluted. However, we could all name the countries where investigations are far more independent, transparent and thorough. Thailand would be where it is on most global rankings on such matters. Somewhere around 80-120 in the world.
