It is wise to try to avoid touching anything metal in Thailand and especially when something powered by electricity is connected to it. Earthing, or grounding, is not something done well in Thailand. I’ve even heard it said that you shouldn’t earth things in Thailand as it attracts lightening strikes!!

Why does the RCCB never trigger? Of course there has to be proper maintenance and monthly checking of the system. Electrical hazard is the most dangerous hazard. It is not visible, It cannot be smelt. It can only be felt. But unfortunately, once it is felt, the person may not be around to explain it.....very sad story. This is another indication that everyone has to learn something about performing CPR as those electrocuted merely have seconds to live as the heart stops fully from pumping blood to brain.

RCCB, what is that - is it the little switch thingy that got replaced with an old nail because it kept going off?

RCCB is the "Residual Current Circuit Breaker" when there is a drop in the current flow back to the system it trips the supply. Normally this happens when there is an earth leakage. In this case the current leak to the earth through the victim hence there will be a drop in the current flow back to the circuit and the RCCB will trip the system totally there by protecting any electrocution
