A very odd decision. There is a reason that wide bodies are more efficient on long haul flights, the engines, that are designed specifically for hours spent at high level. There is a reason that Boeing developed the B737 and Airbus the A320 family, for short haul routes, that spend short periods at higher levels and take many more landing and take off cycles.
