Life is about to get a little easier for pedestrians in Bangkok at the turn of the year. Bangkok Deputy Governor Wisanu Subsompon revealed that two pedestrian tunnels are expected to open under Na Phra Lan Road in early January 2023, reported Bangkok Post. That quote refers to the 1st tunnel which is 96 meters long, which equates to a walk of 1-2 minutes. Yet (rounding averages) there's an apparent need for a set of toilets that targets females every 2 meters and another, disjoint set that targets males every 5 meters. Ignoring the discrepancy between sexes (for all I know there could be a biological explanation -- which would be interesting all by itself), the waste of money and resources to build and then maintain toilets is just mind-boggling.

Did you know that there are physiological differences between men and women? Most men urinate while standing up. That's why there are toilets AND urinals in men's restrooms. Most women I know urinate while sitting, hence their need for a toilet. because of that difference, the international planning standard is  2 female toilets for every 1 male toilet. In respect to having public rest facilities, Bangkok is in dire need of public facilities. Some people have no problem with the stench of urine on walls and storefronts, but on a hot day it is over powering and faint inducing. The sign of a well planned city is the availability of clean restrooms. (Examples are Tokyo, and Singapore). The availability of restrooms encourages people to go out and about. A facility that will have thousands of people using it, and that didn't have  restrooms would be poorly planned. Good on the BMA for its thoughtfulness and modern planning.
