One has to have tremendous sympathy for the poor woman and the loss of her son.

"Shock and confused by the news, Somsri said the 11 individuals had given 200,000 baht in total to her family as a form of reparation – less than 20,000 baht each."

The offer of 200,000 Baht is, for all intents and purposes, an admission of guilt, but one made with the sure knowledge that there will be no repercussions, consequences or accountability. And, even by Thai standards, it is a pittance, and an insultingly low one.

"Somsri urged the media to follow up on the case of her son, saying she had seen how similar stories about abuses in the military were quickly forgotten without any justice being served."

Sadly, the poor woman is correct; without a free media to publicize this case, it'll be swept under the rug like so many others.

Ever wonder why so many powerful People/Groups hamstring, bash and slam the media? Scream 'Fake News'? 'Shoot the messenger'?

Something to ponder on this Sunday afternoon...

The prison sentence seems extremely harsh for the theft of 500 Baht.

Then beaten to death for thieving 2 sachets of coffee.

This lad suffered some real rough justice!

Simple message: don't thieve.

While sympathising with the family on the death of their son, I query the mother's complaint intent. Does she want 'justice' (other prisoners charged with killing/murder) or just after a bigger payout?

If those prisoners are allowed decaf only, then this might have never happened. Seems prisons and prisoners are the same everywhere. Little gang groups. Sorry for the mom's loss, but one has to wonder if her son a good or bad egg from the beginning even in childhood.
