Today is the day the future of cannabis in Thailand will be decided. The Office of the Narcotics Control Board is meeting to discuss proposals calling for the plant to once again be classified as a Type 5 drug. But some powerful political figures insist that the board is powerless to stop the legalised proliferation of cannabis. Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul has repeatedly shrugged off pushes to criminalise cannabis, saying the legalisation was a done deal and going back is not an option. While I generally don't like giving up in the face of failure, this War on Drugs raging for 60 years, clearly has no military/enforcement solution - referring to marijuana specifically.   It's a stale mate that requires a diplomatic solution, not continuing to throw an endless supply of human cannon fodder at the meat grinder feeding the insatiable law enforcement / for-profit prison industrial complex monster.  Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result, because we've always done it this way, thus the beatings shall continue 'till morale improves.

Bit like a country transitioning to (some form of) Democracy, there's the initial period of excited indulgence in the new thing that's been long suppressed.  Weed has been an in-your-face, fashionable trend in Thailand lately.  Some want to dabble in the taboo, and like many first-timers who cough and gag through their first experience, many will find it does nothing for them so what's all the hoopla about?  Some will find it gives them an unpleasant headache or makes them tired, and like the former group, never try it again.   Some will dabble with it on and off going forward.  An even smaller percentage will join the relative minority who've been using it all along anyway, but this is the relative minority of the population the opposition will shout from the rooftops and social media as being a national epidemic.

So the Old Men Yelling at Clouds should show us their wisdom and be patient.   Fads and trends fade and this too shall pass in favor of....whatever the next thing us silly humans come up with next week.

Why have a narcotics board that doesn't have power to override or signal dangerous practice? The Rat will fight tooth and nail for no real change to legislation that favours him financially?

Come to that, a government organisation, paid for by the government - even if it is just an illegal junta - is going to bite the hand that feeds it, in Thailand? Good luck with that!
