Foreign nationals who have not been vaccinated against Covid-19 will be barred from entering Indonesia as the Southeast Asian country works to contain the more transmissible Delta variant. The order goes into effect tomorrow. The government made an announcement yesterday saying that along with being vaccinated, foreign travellers must test negative for Covid-19 and undergo an 8-day quarantine upon arrival. The quarantine was increased from the previous 5-days due to the emergence of the mutated strain. think, and even for over 1 year,

Anyone who wants to travel beyond their country of citizenship needs to understand how dominant the insistence on documented full vaccination is going to become for anyone entering a country or renewing a visa, even one based on marriage.

Full vaccination will soon replace tests, quarantine, special insurance, etc., but we are currently in an in between phase where it is in addition to some of the other restrictions.

By demanding so much, Indonesia is essentially pulling the emergency brake and saying, to quote Kamala, “Do not come. Do not come”.

What I believe we are going to see over the next few months, as most of the world’s middle classes who travel become vaccinated, is a transition to restriction-free entry for the fully vaccinated and a dropping of any alternative arrangements (such as testing + quarantine) for the non-vaccinated. They simply won’t be welcome in the vast majority of countries.

My guess is that these restrictions on the non-vaccinated will last for at least the rest of this decade.

Though the Digital Nomads, English Teachers, those on Business Visas and Retirees from Vietnam may have caused the rush of this to occur in Indonesia. With an influx of visa refusal of extension occurring last month in Vietnam a lot of online YouTube personalities were heading to Indonesia. High chance these people would not have been vaccinated in Vietnam.
