Thailand refused to condemn Russia’s decision to annex parts of Ukraine at the United Nations General Assembly in New York yesterday. In September, Russia proclaimed its annexation of four partially occupied regions in Ukraine – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia – after staging what it called referendums. Ukraine, the UN General Assembly, and their allies refused to recognise the referendums, saying the votes were illegal and coercive. Thailand abstained in the vote on the United Nations resolution along with 35 other nations including China and India, at the UN Headquarters in New York City, New York, United States. The vote […]

It is always good not to get involve with big players. They will be against each other today. Suddenly if there is any benefit for both, then they will shake hands together. Especially USA cannot be trusted. Now they have some oil reserve issue and are planning to shake hands with Venezuela and Iran. So Thailand has made a good decision by not involving itself in such issues

This I have to accept from Pnut and Co.

Despots cannot condemn other despots.  Just not done.

On observing the list of countries that voted against or abstained, he has found his real place on the world stage.

In the light of this I've just cancelled my usual 3 months wintering Thailand.  Thailand isn't getting my money if it isn't willing to condemn invasion, land grab and war crimes against civilians.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ is all that matters to Thailand, if the condemn Russia they might be expected to impose sanctions. Who is going to replace all those Russian tourists laundering dirty money in Thailand?

Wait until China begins annexing SE Asian territories and islands. How many ports have they apparated through Belt & Road. 42 ports in 34 countries. Had Thailand agreed to Kra Canal, China would have taken control of it in all probability like the Hambantota Port in Sri Lanka.

That’s not true. The US is a net oil exporter, and that amount is growing by the day. America has the second or third largest oil reserves in the world. They have also not approached either of those two countries to export outside of sanctions. The media talked about it, but it was nothing but speculation on their part. Fact is neither of those two countries could increase production in a meaningful way even if they wanted too. The that’s how bad their production facilities are at the present time.

Back to the topic. Clearly Thailand is more interested in tourist revenue than the lives of Ukrainians.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

They will get a splinter in the bum from all this sitting on the fence, first Myanmar  and now Russia.

I guess we expect  too much from a military coup government

That vote will come back to haunt Thailand in the future. The US doesn’t forget. One thing that government is very good at is revenge. Thailand will pay a heavy price at some point. I get it. They want Russian tourists. But that won’t fly with the western countries.

I certainly hope so. They can start by calling the Royal Thai Airforce and telling them to forget trying to order any F35’s

All ASEAN members voted for it, except Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, which all abstained. I wouldn’t have picked those three if I had to guess the three “abstainers”.

South Africa also abstained, while Afghanistan voted for it.

Thailand should be ashamed of itself.  Maybe the Thais were afraid that if they  voted for the  motion condemning the annexation of the land in the Ukraine, southerners and Malaysia would question Thailand's  annexation of the Sultanate of Pattani.

Even worse, they actively collaborated with the Japanese and were an ally of Japan, declaring  war on Britain and the United States on 25 January 1942

Ahh man, now they're in trouble. Hopefully they'll reconsider after reading this.

It’s an odd world we live in these days don’t you think? @IanLposts a perfectly decent comment and takes a moral stand against the worst war crimes in Europe for many years and it’s met with sarcasm.

Good on you @IanL  There are plenty of amazing places around the world you can spend your money. It’s Thailands loss for sure. I’m also sure you are not the only one feeling this way about the gutless Thai government.
