Got an old guy does the same our way, in all probability every major city in Thailand has the same situation.

I've very much taken a dislike to the word "fake" in recent years. Words should not be utterly context-dependent to be understood:

1. There's fake stuff in the sense that it is not regulated (with exclamations that it's "therefore" potentially dangerous) but actually does the job in general.
2. There's fake stuff in the sense that it's a make-believe product that never even comes close to doing what's expected of it by the customer.
3. There's fake stuff in the sense that it's a cheap and useless imitation of something but the customer knows and doesn't mind (e.g. shiny and gold-ish necklaces @ THB 200).
4. There's fake stuff in the sense that somebody just doesn't like it and uses the adjective to impress upon others the belief that it's inherently unlikeable.

The braces are "fake and fashionable" according to the quote, which seems to nudge the proper interpretation of "fake" in this article towards the 3rd meaning. If so, where's the harm?

Was there any complaints that the braces she sold didn’t work or is this article based on the fact that someone wasn’t getting a payment from her for protection money and bribes. If they’re just fashionable braces that don’t work then as long as the customer knows what’s the problem? I feel in Thailand it is fashionable to wear braces and if you look at the wearers teeth you oftencan’t see why they need them.

Where's the harm?

Well, let's start with the fact that dentists are qualified health professionals. Orthodontists are dentists who have pursued additional training for the diagnosis, prevention, management, and correction of malpositioned teeth and jaws, and misaligned bite patterns.  Altogether, it requires  4year of dental school + 18-24 months of orthodontic training and supervised practice in addition to the undergraduate education.  Braces and other materials used in the mouth are certified as toxin and heavy metal safe. The braces and grills used for fashion are often toxic, sourced from suppliers who have used cadmium, lead, mercury and other dangerous things.  There's an unqualified woman poking about in people's mouths in the most unhygienic manner. That's how hepatitis, herpes and HIV can be spread. It is doubtful this woman has properly cleaned and sterilized her equipment between customers. She can do real damage if she damages oral tissue. She is a public health danger.

If I am not mistaken that, there is a law against usage/installing of fake braces

It is from some time ago, a decade or such, the time it was just "in" to have braces.

That is a sign of "I can pay that", too!

Needed or not, people wanted to be in, "dentists" made "fake" braces for little money.

Thailand is one of the countries, where people are even keen to keep them longer in as medically needed. Some aren't going back to the dentist after getting told, they can get out in a month or two. Just to keep them in for longer!

The woman now must "brace" herself for a hefty fine coming, else pay with her golden tooth
