In a blow to meat lovers in Thailand, 24 tonnes of smuggled pork were destroyed yesterday. The tragedy took place after the Department of Livestock Development identified Brazilian pork snuck across the border illegally with no documentation. The pork was seized on September 11 when it was uncovered in Samut Prakan. It was being stockpiled in a cold storage facility in the Bangkok suburb province. Authorities were not presented with any documentation that could prove that the meat had been legally imported. Do they even know if it is pork? Brazil has a history of tainted and contaminated meat exports. The most recent was in 2017, when  Brazil’s federal police made public “Operation Carne Fraca” , a two-year investigation that had revealed a complex corruption scheme within the Brazilian meat-production sector, in which health inspectors and politicians were bribed to approve the sale and export of meat unfit for human consumption. The accusations included: misrepresenting products’ nutritional values; failing to meet hygiene standards in slaughterhouses; repackaging of out-of-date meat; tampering with the meat’s colour and smell with acid and potentially carcinogenic chemical substances; and the overuse of harmful additives.  Other plots included use of horses, dogs and salvaged beef in beef exports.
