News Forum - Military conscription in Russia could benefit Thailand’s tourism revenue

Recommended Posts

Thailand could be an attractive and realistic option for men fleeing military conscription in Russia. Reports say that men are fleeing Russia after President Vladmir Putin announced a plan to conscript 300,000 civilians into military service in Ukraine. Several European countries such as Lithuania have already closed their doors to Russian citizens, citing widespread support for Putin’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine as the reason for the ban. Russians are rushing onto flights to countries such as Armenia, Georgia, Montenegro and Turkey, or basically anywhere that will let them in without a visa. Thailand and Russia have a bilateral agreement which […]

Well, the headline was disgusting, but the article wasn't so bad. I support allowing those fleeing Putin's conscrpition into warcriminalhood into Thailand or any nation, mine included. I question if this will help Thailands economy very much.

For the Russians who want to flee dictator Putin's sick war of sensless killing his people, Thailand and every country should open up to these folk. I can immagine he will be ripping kids away fromn their parents and dads away from their families. He needs a bullet in his brain.

Yeah...one can flee the country. But how long can survive? Soon they will be left without any money to survive in an land where they don't have anything. If such a situation arise in the long run can the country like Thailand manage it?

well they will learn how dumb it is to sit on the fence over Ukraine.  They can't be friends with the deranged criminal Putin and his psycho thugs and at the same time harbour Russian draft dodgers, many of whom will need Thai government help as refugees. You cant help but laugh at the situation they have got themselves into.

I’m curious to see how Thailand plans to financially handle the influx of Russians once they arrive in their country and a few years down the road. Also thinking if this will hurt Thailand economically and financially with other countries that will not support a country that helps Russia. Draft dodgers or not. Will Thailand give them free housing, food and work permits? Are Russians still affected financially from the banks where they cannot withdraw any funds or use any source of credit card? Will the streets of Thailand be over populated with these Russians in the homeless shelters and homelessness? A life savings only last for so long, what happens when the Russians money runs out in Thailand?

Thank You

Nope. The RTP or Immigration will arrest them for overstaying their visa and put them into IDC (Immigration Detention Centre). They will then be deported back to Russia at their own expense or stay in IDC until someone pays for their one way ticket home. They could say they are political refugees but I don’t like any draft dodgers chances of success - after all, who is going to permanently accept them into their country?

All good questions, Marvin, and I am sure TAT and the desperate Junta have got absolutely NO clue on how to answer them. Why look past the end of your nose when it may not be your problem very soon? Also, the class of 'citizen' that is able to wangle their way out of the Motherland - is that the type of person a government would want living visa-to-visa? Will they even bother applying for visas, or just fade into the woodwork and magically find anonymous employment in the illegal casinos that seem to be bulletproof in the current environment?

Only now with the conscription has the war actually been brought home to them. I would not allow these Russians fleeing their country to come here. I would turn them around and tell them "Fix your problem at home".

The Russians leaving are the middle class and rich. The poor cannot afford to. Its only when those groups get inconvenienced by Czar Putins policies that things will actually change in Russia. So send them back.

Don't understand why it's not already happened

Exactly. My first thought was "more quality tourists? lol" - I mean I'm sure they are nice people and all (some at least), but they are likely to be on a very tight budget. This does not help tourism. More like it helps these guys (which is a good thing, mind you, anyone who wants to avoid fighting a pointless war against their will should be able to!).
