Officials are once again pushing for more motorcycle riders to wear helmets in Thailand, this time in Phuket. The push is part of another one of Thailand’s many road safety campaigns.  Local officials handed out helmets to students and other community members in the Wichit area of Phuket’s main city district on Wednesday. The officials also finished painting a crosswalk in front of Dibuk hospital. The campaign is being organised by the Phuket Provincial Office of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM-Phuket).  The DDPM’s Deputy Chief Pornthep Prekham said the campaign is targeting several local agencies and institutions […]

Very good idea for the riders safety, does this include when there is 3or4people on a bike, another good idea is for the riders to have lights on their bikes at night.

Good, so the ambulance just need a short ride, to get to the people and back to the ER. That is a 4 lane racetrack, as soon as the next traffic light (villa 2) is green.

And this pushing for helmet use, how often are they doing it?

I just remember the "100% helmet use" or the last time "we won't charge people now, we give out helmets" campaigns.

as long they let it go, after 4 weeks again and again, why do they even bother doing new campaigns. You wanna change something? Don't do just a temporary campaign, charge people all the time in case they doing it not like they should.

Every time you see someone riding without a helmet, not ignorlng it because it is not at a checkpoint or not a foreigner.

Yes but they don’t want a tail light on a M/bike so the ghosts can’t chase them

2 foreigners that died weren’t wearing helmets as weren’t about 80% of Thais in my area while most don’t have a drivers licence and a lot that do paid a bribe for it.

I think some of them have a nice collection of free helmets if they not sell them already this will never stop

just give them a small fine first time bigger the 2e and bigger the 3e

and not say they have no money to pay that is just the point of a fine

if you can not pay leave the bike it will take only a month and everybody wears one

I stood across the road from a police roadblock in Phuket. Thais not wearing helmets were not stopped. Tourists on the other hand were. Off to one side were 5 or so motorcycle taxis as the police duly wrote out a ticket and chained the bike until the ticket was paid. Tourist turns to the nearest motorcycle taxi who charges them 200 baht to take them around the corner to the police station a 20 baht fare at most. This went on until late in the evening. Not one Thai person was stopped. 3 up 4 up not a helmet to be seen. It was like they were invisible. Is this really about road safety? I wonder!!!!

TiT.  Very friggin' believable.

My Thai wife, God love her, this morning said to me, "In Thailand, there are rules and there are rules."  Wearing a helmet or seat belt are those very rules she was talking about.
