A non-profit organization requested 7-Eleven convenience stores in Thailand to provide a special shelf for products without halal labels. The group said halal labels made goods more expensive. Yesterday, Thai Buddhists from Buddhism Protection for Peace (BPP) gathered in front of CP Towner on Silom Road in Bangkok to hand over a letter about halal labels to the executive board of the CP All company. The group’s representative, Praphat Kittiruedeekun, reported that the BPP wants every 7-Eleven convenience store in Thailand to have a separate shelf of products without halal labels. Praphat said 160,000 halal food products approved by the […]

Don't they have a choice to buy cheaper non-halal food?

Sounds like organic, it's more expensive, but if you have a choice you don't have to buy it.

Can't believe there are some products that are only halal throughout all of Thailand.

Or is it that 7 only sells a halal version. If so, shop at Family Mart...

The halal label isn’t important to us [non-Muslims], and we shouldn’t pay more for it.

Strange. They're not arguing for a dual price system (Muslim vs non-Muslim, which BTW would be a bad idea), just a separate Halal-shelf (which BTW also is a bad idea).

The main argument seems to be that such a shelf would prevent non-Muslims from paying a premium price. How so? A non-Muslim buys a particular food product for its taste (Halal or not) or its price. Since 7-11 products are clearly price-tagged and balanced when it comes to Halal vs. non-Halal, the issue of inadvertently paying a premium price doesn't come up.

If this non-Thai idea to introduce segregation is accepted, I look forward (only out of amusement) to the next iteration, e.g. a section for Hindus (no meat), Christians (no coagulated blood), Satanists (devilishly hot chips), etc.

So don’t buy it. The cost differences would be negligible. imo, this labeling “issue” is just a Trojan Horse to force halal (Muslim) foods to be separated from non halal foods. It is discrimination which some Thais unashamedly embrace.

Muslims in Malaysia do this in many supermarkets.  The entire store is halal.  The non-halal beer, wine, alcohol, pork and non-halal products are in a separate room through a closed door.

I saw the same thing in those Middle Eastern countries that allow non-halal sales.

Yep, Bahrain has the infidels room in the Al Jazeera supermarkets. They'll even take the labels off and repack in plain clingfilm for you after you've paid if you're going back over the border.
