Article indicates that the man who fell 9 stories had apparent head injuries from the fall.

 points to mention.

1) It wasn't the fall that killed the American man. It was the sudden stop.

2) If the American man had been wearing a motorcycle helmet before dropping 9 floors, then apparent head injuries would have been minimized.

Ad 1) That's why people who claim a fear of heights are wrong (they can look at a cloud from the ground up without fear). It's depths they're afraid of.

Ad 2) The head-on impact speed after a fall like that is about 85 km/h. The head might be a in somewhat more presentable shape afterwards (at the cost of neck vertebrae; the energy has to go somewhere after all), but the warranty on the helmet would be voided. Why would anyone want to waste a good helmet just for the looks of it?
