A newly-proposed cannabis bill has been quashed as the Thai House of Representatives voted on its withdrawal. The bill was shot down after a 198 to 136 vote in the House. Lawmakers say the bill needs to be revised as its wording was regarded as “loose and could potentially expose youth to health risks.” The bad news is that if the bill is withdrawn, there may not be enough time to push it through the current Parliament’s session as it expires in March of 2023. No matter your views on the subject, more than a million Thais have asked for and received permission to grow weed and certainly are already doing so. Simply put, it will NOT be declared illegal again; the genie is out of the bottle.

I am 100% in favour of legalization and a 'Small Government/Low Taxes' guy, but even I am truly appalled by the incompetence displayed.

The legalization of weed needs some regulations and guidelines, and common-sense rules and regs exist in many countries already; it'd be quite simple to copy and adapt it all to a Thai situation. Even as a stop-gap, simply declare that weed must follow the same rules and regs as alcohol until a new regulatory framework is in place.

The current Thai government has achieved that rare distinction among bad governments; instead of creating idiotic rules to harm a situation, they have harmed a situation through inaction.

Weed can and will be a multi-billion dollar industry in Thailand/Asia, but only to the first country which does things right. If Thailand cedes the advantages that it currently has, it'll be weeping into its whiskey about lost revenue for a century to come.

It is good that the bill gets shot down. Many are only interested in short term financial gains. They don't care about the long term impact that it would bring to the future generations of the country.

Please be explicit what the "long term impact" is for the future generations of Thailand are.
Don't let your own personal views or biases get in the way!  Cannabis is better than cigarettes and on par with alcohol.
