Russian biometrics company ‘NtechLab’ have announced plans to “enter the Thai market.” The company produce a facial recognition tool called ‘FindFace’, which can be used to identify suspected criminals. The company are also considering moving their Asia headquarters to Thailand. The company claims that 23 countries worldwide are already using FindFace surveillance technology, sparking privacy and human rights concerns among the public. Major Russian companies have been put under sanctions from the West following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February. However, an investigation by Insider earlier this month revealed that several Western companies are using NtechLab’s surveillance technologies, despite sanctions. […]

If this system goes out in the public then nothing good will come of this. Criminals will go silent and find ways of bypassing for being found or viewed by this utter crapiola technology. We as normal folk will be the ones followed and documented of our everymove more so from this than anything else.

Wrong heading. Russia isnt planning anything. Only a Russian company is considering moving its HQ to Thailand.

If anybody is planning to install this software in Thailand it should be the Thai government.

I dont think it's a good idea anyhow. Just imagine, wealthy foreign tourists being followed by camera's 24/7. I would not like that. Leaking footage of well-known persons leaving a gogo bar with a gogo girl? Uh-uh. The possibilities are endless.

The Regime? That doesn't sound good.

Sure makes sunglasses, hats and masks all the more desireable. This is a total bad idea if it is used and connected somehow to the hundreds of thousands of Thai Cameras all in one system.

Nope. Even in democratic countries systems like this eventually can, and will be mis-used, and abused. So in a highly corrupt country run by a military junta I imagine the abuse will start from day 1. To keep track of all members of opposition parties? To gather 'evidence' of undermining activities such as opposition meetings? And so on.

It's got less to do with crime suppression, as it's really about control. The risk of abuse of this technology, even in the hands of a benevolent government, far outweighs the benefits.

Certainly, these type of arguments can and will be used to implement systems like this. But once the system is running it will get used for quite other things. And yes, the politicians will vow, vow, and vow again they will not abuse the system. We all know the value of a vow by a Thai politician I think.

Or not and abused as a way of control. My bet is abuse and control and mapping everyone.

And just about anything else the government would like to know or find out. The list is endless, just ask the Chinese.

Doesn't matter if it's a Russian company. This kind of tech is getting to be ubiquitous, there's even facial recognition solutions that can integrate with your home camera security system.

World is going to sh** and I for one am happy that I'll hopefully not live to see the worst of it.

I've been a tech lover for most of my life but it's getting to be ridiculous.

Originally technology was intended to improve people's lives but it's getting to the point where a lot of tech is just tech for tech's sake...and for $$$$ of course.

Worst part is that gen whatever doesn't even realize the rabbit hole they're heading down.

Used by the casino industry in Las Vegas and DMV to prevent individuals from obtaining several licenses in different names. Other practical uses I'm sure.

Given the level of corruption in public office in Thailand maybe this sort of technology will almost certainly end up being used for illicit purposes.

Are they considering moving their HQ to Thailand?
The way I read it they're expanding:

We are currently looking at Thailand as a potential NtechLab headquarters.

All of this does less harm than having facial recognition software installed everywhere by extremely dubious companies from totalitarian states... The Nazis would have benefited from these opportunities to be able to automatically identify people by race and religious characteristics...
