News Forum - Tourism stocks tumble amid Chinese tourist fears
The negative stories that have been coming out of Thailand for over a year, especially the Chinese kidnappers, the boats sinking & accidents, the call centre scammers in Myanmar, all the violence and attacks on tourists, has made the Chinese less likely to visit Thailand. It was a big mistake to open Thailand to Chinese and others without a Visa for short term gains - they are going to be paying for that decision for a long time, because what they have attracted is not the 'high quality' tourists they were claiming to target. Tourism has not rebounded to anywhere near the levels of 2019, despite TAT's claims for 35+ million tourists in 2024. There were 39 million in 2019 and the economic impact was clear - the economy in 2024 is doing it tough and the numbers aint what TAT claims they are. If anyone really believes the TAT lies that all the people who crossed the land borders into Thailand were Tourists, then I have some swamp land to sell you. Malaysia 4.5 mil, Laos 1.1 mil, Cambodia 500K, Myanmar 490K for a total of 6.59 million Tourists (more than from China) spending 52K Baht each? That TAT claim is total BS !!
