Unfortunately, many Monks in Thailand are short ordination Monks. This is often done, in reality twice in their lives, once as a Samenara then later in life as a Bhikku. Unfortunately these guys have no real intentions of remaining in the Monk hood and even less intention of keeping their vows. This is a shame as it often brings comments putting down all the good Monks who exist in many places in Thailand.

As the Thai abbott of my Thai temple in London likes to say "you need to be very careful when choosing a temple in Thailand". Very easy to spot the good temples and monks though - they are both clean and don't pander for money. At a rough guess that's probably about 15% of the total !
