Top medic says cloth masks don’t protect against Covid-19

A prominent infectious disease specialist at Bangkok’s Phramongkutklao Hospital says cloth masks are ineffective against Covid-19 and people should wear surgical masks. Nation Thailand reports that Dr Thanaphan Phibunbannakit has called on the government to procure additional surgical masks as Thailand logs 4,786 new infections and a record high of 53 deaths. Thanaphan says people who are yet to receive their second dose of a Covid-19 vaccine or those waiting on alternative vaccines are at risk of Covid-19 infection. When even wearing surgical masks won't protect you sufficiently, it's just a matter of time before these ones < see pic > will be mandated.

I want to remember that internationally they say that surgical masks don’t protect the wearer (as much) form c19 but those close to her or him…as it’s made to isolate bacteria, protect the patient from infection, during surgery or hospital care. Not protecting the hospital personal from the patient.

That's the official and recognised view in Thailand too, despite the naysayers here.

It's about protecting others from you, not the wearer from others.

Doing some shopping in town today after reading this, although everyone (hundreds) I saw was masked, I only saw one wearing a cloth mask, and everyone else was wearing a 3-step paper filter - and that's out in the sticks, in the provinces.

Cloth one's get filthy as well. With a box of 50 surgical available for 39 baht at Mr DIY they are as cheap as chips. If you aren't uber financially constrained I would buy them and use them once and discard.
