Phuket notches 14th infection since last week

Recommended Posts

Since last week, Phuket has had 14 Covid infections. Their vaccination rate is now 80% (over the threshold sought for herd immunity). Yesterday, the Phuket Provincial public Heath Office state they had 3 covid infections on the island. Since April, there have been 723 confirmed Covid cases. The CCSA has also outlined its criteria for its Phuket Sandbox “contingency plan“. The plan is in case Covid infections “start” ballooning after the anticipated reopening for foreign tourists Thursday, July 1. The Sandbox policy will be “reviewed” if, among other reasons, there over 90 infections throughout the island in 7 days. Also […]

just how many have been vaccinated and how many vaccinations have they recieved one or 2 ? instead of fudging the numbers tell us the true figures from the correct source not a minister from TAT or someone plucked out to give false information. I'm sensing an Escuse ready for when this stupid plan falls on its sword.

As long as Phuket keeps itself isolated from unvaccinated (2 jabs) Thais and illegal workers from other countries, then they should be able to keep the numbers under control.  The problem is clearly not fully vaccinated tourists/visitors, but they are the ones who have to go to great trouble and expenses just to visit the island.  What chance if the sandbox becomes successful, that it is all undone when some Phuket businesses illegally import cheap workers via local boats from Pang Nga after driving them up from down south where delta C19 is all the rage ??   I hope that does not happen - it would be a disaster for the ordinary Thais.

You are quite right, it could well be successful given that the new case numbers are so low and the visitors/tourists are vaccinated and covid free. It just takes one rotten apple to ruin it for not just Phuket but the whole of Thailand.

they are getting "geared " up for July1, can anyone confirm if there are any actual arrivals in the first week? There will not be any Aussie people as the govt here are banning travel for holidays until possibly Q2 next year

Ask again, next week!

NO IT ISN'T!!!

That's completely untrue, and it's NOT what the source report says:

"The report for yesterday marked that 374,631 had received one vaccination injection and that 298,320 people in Phuket had received two vaccination injections (64% of the 466,587 target).

The target of 466,587 people in Phuket to be vaccinated has long been reported by officials as 70% of the island’s full population, which must be vaccinated in order to achieve herd immunity, and has been marked as a critical requirement for reopening the island to receiving foreign tourists on July 1, though no officials have been emphasising that point in the past few weeks."

The island's full population is over 550,000 plus some 70,000 registered migrant workers (and an unknown number of unregistered) so the "target" is barely 75% of that.

With only 426,894 registered for vaccines, that's less than 70% of the population even when all are fully vaccinated, even overloooking that the 70% requirement was based on a vaccine that was 98% effective (not 51%) and that the Delta variant requires 85 - 90% to be vaccinated for herd immunity.

With only 298,320 actually fully vaccinated that's 48% of the population. Why report "80%", when the numbers in the source report are clear that it's only 48%?

Tourists specially from the uk have to be fully vaccinated ie 2 shots before they can even leave the uk Bob. Don't know other country's but i can see rises because as we know businesses will use migrant staff who are more likely not even had a test let alone a vaccine. 1st tourist infected by this will be blown up and blamed for bringing it in with them.

Excellent post on actual numbers. I would ask The Thaiger to update us (GMT or TNT) about daily case numbers in Phuket and the rolling 7 day number.

Fully vaccinated people will get covid and some of those people will spread covid albeit at a reduced rate. A zero covid policy is unrealistic but a very low deaths objective is attainable with high vaccine rollout.
