A series of earthquakes struck Myanmar’s Shan State and Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand through the night. The earthquakes began at around 11:30pm yesterday and as of 7am, a total of 47 tremors ranging in magnitude from 2.4 to 6.4 on the Richter scale had occurred. More earthquakes are expected today, according to Thailand’s meteorological department. No damage or injuries have been reported as a result of the earthquakes so far. If they have one in Bangkok we may find out how well built all those high rise condos are.

Experienced one some 40+ years ago in BKK, had cracks you could put your hand in afterwards.

That was a 4 level place so the 20 plus levels now ?????????

It was downgraded to an M 5.9 and now an M 5.0

We've felt a few minor tremors before but not this one, others did.

Earthquakes affecting Bangkok are exceedingly unlikely as there are no fault lines nearby. Yes, you have the Sri Sawat one in Kanchanaburi, but that one is quite weak compared to the fault lines in northern Thailand and Shan State. Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and adjacent areas are the most vulnerable to Earthquake damage in Thailand.

Bangkok is built on deep and soft alluvial soil, which can amplify incoming ground motion even from events occurring hundreds of kilometers distant. The ground motion experienced at locations on deep alluvial basins can be further amplified above and beyond what would be expected using the near-surface soil stiffness parameter only.

In recent years earthquakes  in the same general region have caused  high rise  buildings in Bangkok  too  rock noticeably. In locations in Japan if the constant rumbles under the feet were stop  people would start to fear the build up of potential seismic pressure ! Better a lil bit at a time than one  massive  bang !
