While he is mention rubbish, how about telling EVERYONE on the island, the dirt from the driveway and from the sidewalk in front of the house, even the road in front of it, not to sweep that dirt into the sewer. It might not be much, every day, but over time and with some dry weeks/month, they "may fill up a bit. And that can be part of the next flood, then

That is the next thing, cleaning them, AFTER half of the hill got flushed into it, would be a good thing, too. Or every year minimum once, just before the rainy season? But for the topic, I only would like to see them not to be used as disposal for everything, the locals don't wanna put in garbage bags.
Malc-Thai Posted July 16, 2022 #231352 Share Posted July 16, 2022 The 6 bins we use are 100 metres from our house and serve over 150 houses..they are full by 9am and emptied in the late evening... bags are then piled up on the floor around the bins.. its right next to the river! .. guys come along and split the bags looking for something of value and leave the rubbish on the floor , as soon as the wind picks up a lot gets blown into the river! I personally don't see people throwing rubbish into the river just the wind doing it

They can eat all the rice they want, it doesn't cause anyone any harm. Throwing trash in the canal is illegal, selfish and stupid behavior. They could easily enforce it by fining or even jailing people. That would send a message.

You do describe a real world situation though - quite often it's wind, or animals such as street dogs that create the mess, not necessarily deliberate discarding of garbage into the river. On the other hand, years ago now, I observed how restaurants in Mae Sai, located right along the border with Tachilek, Myanmar, would discard trash into the Sai river, which forms the border with Myanmar. Some of this waste would end up flowing into the nearby Mekong at the Golden Triangle, especially during the rainy season when river levels swell and currents are strong. In Patong past the fire station.. the dogs here are well looked after and never see them near the bags, just people picking through the bags.. and allowing the wind to do the rest, but in fairness many people do just put loose rubbish all around, like bags and discarded drink cartons, because again the bins don't get emptied enough or not enough of them here in this location
