Two days of continuous heavy rainfall has caused “the worst floods in 10 years” in parts of Buriram province, northeast Thailand. Heavy rainfall during the early hours of yesterday morning caused flash flooding in Ban Dan district while most people were sleeping. Around 30 houses and restaurants, as well as village roads and agricultural land, have been damaged in the floods. Chaiyaphum province in northeast Thailand is also experiencing heavy rains and flash flooding this week. A number of years ago, remember Bangkok HQ directed provincial govs to clean out all the khlongs and drain systems in their areas of responsibility, and seem to recall there was some funding tied to it.   Saw crews and heavy equipment working like ants for the better part of two weeks in and around my area, including Army conscripts put to the task.  All Hands to the Pump.

Stands out in my mind because it was during the latter stage of cool/dry season, and I thought it an unusually forward looking preventative maintenance project reminiscent of a switched on public works/civil engineering department preparing for a highly probable event months into the future.  Nice one, Thailand!

Contrasted against current images of people wading around in flooded khlongs with hand tools after-the-fact.   Nobody saw this one coming.
