Singapore Airlines’ Enormous Australian Operation

SIA now flies to more Aussie destinations than any other Asian airline >

SIA maintained slots at the busy destinations all through Covid and with their superb management and forward planning, almost monopolise routes between SEA and Aus.  Their fleet is primarily Airbus along with B737's for Darwin and Cairns services.  Attractive staff and superior service have always attracted me to fly SIA whenever possible.

Singapore Airlines' Australia routes

Singapore Airlines has seven passenger routes from its Changi hub to Australia. That's up by one over the same period in 2019. Since March 2022, Darwin and Cairns have been served by Singapore Airlines itself rather than its narrow body partner Silk Air, while Canberra (served as part of a Singapore-Canberra-Wellington routing) was dropped in March 2020.

Between June 30th and October 29th, Singapore Airlines has up to 17x daily Australia flights, more than to all of Europe and North America. However, despite the addition of Darwin and Cairns, flights remain down. It's because Sydney and Melbourne both have 4x daily rather than the previous 5x daily, Perth and Brisbane are 3x daily instead of 4x, and Adelaide is sub-daily, down from one each day. The schedule is as follows:

Sydney: 4x daily; 2x daily A350-900, 1x A380, 1x B777-300ER

Melbourne: 4x daily; 3x daily A350-900, 1x B777-300ER

Brisbane: 3x daily; A350-900

Perth: 3x daily; 2x daily B787-9, 1x A350-900

Adelaide: 5x weekly; A350-900

Darwin: 5x weekly; B737 MAX 8

Cairns: 4x weekly; B737 MAX 8

70% of passengers transited

Of course, Singapore Airlines wouldn't be so prominent in Australia but for its geographic location, traffic rights, and significant Changi hub. In full-year 2019, Cirium shows that Singapore Airlines had over 4.1 million Australia roundtrip seats for sale. It was its biggest country market, surpassing Indonesia and China – even if partner SilkAir is included.

According to booking data, an estimated seven in ten passengers connected to/from Australia over Singapore Airlines' hub, a considerable proportion. Analysing where they went shows that South Asia was the largest subregion, followed by Southeast Asia, Western Europe, and Northeast Asia. These four subregions had three-quarters of Singapore Airlines' Australia transit passengers.
