A Norwegian man allegedly stabbed himself in the stomach last night while alone in his hotel bedroom in Pattaya. Frank Gjesvold was rushed to hospital with a gaping wound to the abdomen after staff heard screams for help at 11.30pm from room 409 at a hotel in the South Pattaya area, Nong Prue subdistrict, in Chon Buri province. Staff banged on the door a number of times but he did not open the door so they used a spare key to enter the room and witnessed blood scattered all over the room. The staff then called the police. “Police said there were no traces of violence but they did find a packet of dried marijuana leaves in his room.”

Regrettably, this is the statement in the story that many will seize upon and run with.

stabbed himself?....Marijuana?

Maybe he was a first time smoker and had never had the munchies before?

I'll bite, just to raise "the many number of people that seize upon that statement and run with it" from zero to one.

Seizing: "Heavy cannabis use is associated with an increased risk for self-harm and suicide attempts."

Running: "Correlations found by studies have a high confidence level but small margin, and a causal effect seems unlikely."

I don't see what could be regrettable about considering the relevance/worth of statements like the one in the article (rather the opposite).

May be ran out of finances......easy way out

perhaps the police is looking into the box files, on the floor, next to the printer.

They may find some reasons, why he may have wanted to kill himself.

I dont think many foreigners are dumb enough to believe all these foreigners are hurting (or killing) themselves in Thailand.

My question is do they think Thai people are dumb enough to believe this?

What’s regrettable is that a certain proportion of uninformed people will assume that cannabis use causes people to want to commit harakiri.

I think there is a mix up between causation an correlation.  As in, depressed people are more likely to turn to cannabis and separately depressed people are more likely to cause self harm.

Anyone who has used the plant would know that the effects would not lead to self harm other than indulging in unhealthy snacks.

You’re onto something there MrNovax. In many instances, lack of experience or exposure often leads to easily influenced opinions or uninformed conclusions.

Some folk will read that article and wonder about other evidence not yet found; others will have their “aha!” moment as soon as they read the bit about the devil’s lettuce.

Why would you first stab yourself and then scream for help? It was easier to not stab and not ask for help😂

🙄🙄🙄 Here we go again... From now on literally every single thing that goes wrong will be blamed on marijuana.

Definetely some sort of hardship I would say spiralling down from the effects of the Covid and perhaps Russian war.

According to some of our resident "experts", reefer madness manifests in many ways, including self-mutilation.

'"packet of dried marijuana leaves" obviously the dude got scammed

Buying weed is a bit different than going to a liquor store and it is dangerous as it could be the last bag, Be vigilant as some flowers are laced with chemicals or harmful substances just to get the buyers addicted, meth, ketamine, fentanyl...etc, There are test kits you can buy but a cheap cell phone microscope gadget like 200x will defiantly save you of being scammed, if you are a first timer stick with legal dispensaries, Hope this helped, wish everyone to be safe and aware, Enjoy.

They did find a packet of weed, or maybe just dried leaf (useless "shake" as aficionados call it.)

Did they look in the bar fridge too?

It's full of dangerous drugs that make people do dumb stuff.

I suppose we better get used to hearing MJ mentioned every single time it's found on or near a crime scene, perp, or victim.

Irrational fear runs deep, rational, not so much; they still haven't taken off masks, or put on their helmets!

How about the fact that there is nothing in the story about heavy or excessive use. How about there is no evidence at this point of whether he was previously a user of cannabis or if he was a first time user or if he had been using at the time of the incident at all. However as others have pointed out some people like you will immediately latch on to that little irrelevant gem and build a fictitious case around it.

Correct it seems much more likely that he was not alone and that the person that did the stabbing had already left the room before hotel staff arrived at the door.

Doesn't the screaming for help part raise questions? People that are trying to end it don't often scream for help...

Absolute fantasy!

No sane dealer anywhere laces weed with anything!

1. Legit weed dealer does not want or need to go to jail for 15 years selling laced dope to the wrong person, just why?

2. Assuming dealer stupid enough, he has to be found by the random buyer again to profit from his free sample!

3. Experienced user going to know their weed was laced. They're more than likely never to buy from him again, if they ever found him again, see point 2.

4. Nobody but nobody gets hooked on the first hit of anything. It's drug war propaganda. Nicotine is the most addictive substance known to man. Ask any smoker how they had to hammer that stuff to get hooked, how they retched and hacked through their first rebellious smokes. Yes, some drugs are absolutely fantastic at the first try, but, you still have the will power to elect to not go there again. Young people are more vulnerable to pushing the envelope and forming a habit, and addiction is complex, and mostly in the person not any given substance, but back to the argument of why would a legit weed seller risk everything to sell to a minor, especially a hard drug?

5. Look at the drug hauls lately. Dealers don't need to slip expensive product into weed. The hauls are massive because, people are using, enjoying responsibility, telling their friends, and still living productive lives, even though the risks are so great in Thailand, they go back because they enjoy the feelings they get from their use. Again, no one gets addicted from one session. Many people outgrow drug use, many can and do use meth and heroin months or years apart. You never hear from this vast group because they have real functional lives, families, and careers to protect!

Drugs do have health risks. Sugar is a drug, it has health risks. But that's not the scope of this rebuttal.

6. The idea that a dealer is lacing weed with anything, which often wouldn't work anyway, since weed and meth, for example, are "drawn" into the lungs differently, is bad economics on behalf of the dealer, especially now weed is decrim.

7. If people want other drugs, they'll simply ask, if a dealer wants to sell meth to a weed buyer, he'll simply offer it, and make a profit right then and there, rather than "hope" to get someone hooked.

The whole idea of lacing weed is a duh as the legend of laced Halloween candy, yes it happened, ONCE the guy was caught. End of report.

Fact is, this is just yet more endless drug warrior nonsense, and it's all falling apart fast, as posts like this debunk it to a wide audience whereas before such sensational rubbish went from mouth to mouth, unchallenged.

Whether you're pro or anti drug, a smidgen of common sense shows this idea to be an urban legend.

I have an interesting true crime story that refutes the norm.

London 1970s

Young lad found dead in bedsit.

He has a crossbow bolt wedged in his head.

Blood and shambles everywhere.

Initial presumption, foul play.

Further investigation revealed mental health issues.

He was the weapons owner.

He had shot himself in the head, not killed himself immediately, and then either in shock or remorse or a combination of both, had spent the last few minutes of his tragic life stumbling about, bleeding on everything, clawing at the bolt in a futile effort to remove it.

This story, along with graphic crime scene photos,  was used at Hendon in the homicide lecture given to trainee cops back in the day.
