It’s China’s response to the US and Thailand getting closer once again:

A U.S. Defense Department statement issued after the meeting said Austin and Prayuth “shared perspectives on regional security issues, and discussed opportunities to strengthen the U.S.-Thai alliance.” It said Austin declared Washington’s interest in strengthening “interoperability between the U.S. and Thai forces and to support Thailand’s modernization requirements.”

Washington designated Thailand a major non-NATO ally, one of about 20 worldwide. Such status means the U.S. regards Thailand as a strategic partner, and facilitates some aspects of military assistance and cooperation. The annual multinational Cobra Gold military exercise, one of the world’s biggest, is hosted in Thailand in partnership with the United States.

With Thailand’s long history of playing the middle ground. People sometimes forget the US and Thailand have a mutual defense treaty.

They don't call it the indo-china peninsula for nothing. There is about as much chance of Thailand keeping China at arms length as there is of Thai people eating less sugar... Zero. With the only exception being Vietnam... They march to their own drummer, as it where. Cambodia is already lost to China, and Myanmar is simply corrupt beyond hope. And don't expect Laos to put up any resistance to China's courting.

All one has to do to realize what is to become of Thailand when china takes control is spend a little time over in Lao. I do, I have family there. Lao is just a vassal state of china as is Cambodia. And I've spent time there also. Lots of changes since I first went in 2004, none for the better. China long term plans have gotten shorter with the US screwing up all over the globe, particular the stupid never-ending wars in the Mid-East. They see the US empire dying, destroying itself from the inside by anti-democratic forces and are moving faster than ever to take over. That china intends to control SE Asia and beyond is no secret. China intends to be the ruling force in the world. Dear leader has been in Xi's back pocket from the git go and has no intention of changing directions. I would say may Buddha help us when Thailand falls, but instead will say may the gods of war help us because it's coming.

When youve lost credibility all over the world of course they would want friends.  And of course Thailand will embrace them.

Same same but different nit noy.

You don't need fake friends, but friends with benefit is great
