Recommended Posts

As Bangkok faces a health crisis of bed shortages for Covid-19 patients, one woman died after waiting a week to be assigned an ICU bed. The woman was 38 years old from Laos and lived in Ban Krua Nuea in Bangkok. She suspected that she caught Covid-19 at her work selling clothes around Pratunam Market. After developing a cough she went to a local hospital to get tested for Covid-19 and when the diagnosis came back positive her 42 year old husband was tested also and was confirmed to have the Coronavirus. The diagnosis came on June 18, and she […]

In times of shortages, ICU beds and health services at government hospitals should be reserved for patients who pay for their healthcare through MANDATORY deductions from their paychecks. Paying for something and not receiving it is FRAUD. Cold and heartless? It's far more cold and heartless to deny someone who has paid for something than denying someone who would receive it without having contributed.

No, it's because of a shortage of state hospital beds. At least, during this exceptional time, with many people occupying the beds, those who pay for healthcare will be more likely to afford to pay for private hospital care than those in a lower financial bracket. Would you deny those people state-provided care?

It seems that the government prefers buying submarines, tanks and a military transport plane than to spend money on lifesaving medicines for its citizens. . . .

. . . and on more hospitals, too, methinks.

Not "cold and heartless", just badly ill-informed.

Government hospitals in Thailand aren't funded by "MANDATORY deductions from paychecks" but from an allocation from the budget from taxes, from income tax to VAT to capital gains, etc, for the benefit of all.

Your "MANDATORY deductions from paychecks" cover your SSO benefits, which include free health care but give you no additional entitlement to it.

Thailand actually has plenty of hospitals as there are over 1,000 including a hospital and A&E department in virtually every district - that's far more than in the West.  The problem is the limited facilities and equipment and the  level of care available, although some are exceptional.

The problem  is actually worse than the headlines (here and in the Bangkok Post) indicate, as she wasn't waiting a week for "an ICU bed" but was waiting for a Covid-quarantined bed, which is inexcusable as it requires minimal extra equipment, just some forethought, planning and co-ordination - which Thais are perfectly capable of, as they managed it very easily in my local district hospital.
