My Thai gf works as a computer analyst for the Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister - a pretty darn good job! Yet she has to pay for her uniform and all the ceremonial adornments she has to wear to the royal ceremonies she attends. She makes a pretty decent salary by Thai standards but these costs can really bite into her income. Why do the cops get government paid uniforms but other civil servants have to pay? Doesn’t seem fair.

Cops have to buy their own guns and motorcycles.

There are no standard-issue pistols carried by the Royal Thai Police. Policemen must buy their own pistol and he/she must buy what is available in Thailand and what he/she can afford. If the police officer cannot afford a pistol, he may purchase one by paying in instalments through his police co-operative.
